Female R&B Singers
I was listening to Brandy's latest CD yesterday, Afrodisiac, while cleaning my place. I think that's one of the most slept on albums. It's a very grown up album...very mature. Then I began to think, what ever happened to Brandy and Monica? Is there a market for those two anymore? Mya was in the same crowd and she seems to be doing okay. Did Beyonce', Ciara, Rhianna, Nelly Furtado, etc. snatch the limelight though? If baby girl was still alive, do you think she would be okay? Would she be able to carve out a space for herself? For some reason I think Aaliyah would be okay. She would always reinvent herself. What do you think?

Monica completely reinvented herself from a "sweetheart" to some kind of tatted up, ride or die, thug misses chick...to me she sings like someone who doesn't have a powerful voice, like she's down playing her talent.
I like Mya, but if she wasn't cute and able to dance her ass off, she probably would have disappeared a long time ago and (though I know some die hard Aaliyah fans would disagree), I also think Aaliyah would be in the same boat as Mya - great dancers who don't sing as well.
I think if Aaliyah was alive today she would have reinvented herself to be a successful actress.
I would have totally agred with Diva had i not seen Mya two weekends ago...she is totally slept on and can totally BLOW! Loved her live, she can sing, i mean SING and puts on a show...
i think Monica has always been rough around the edges, she was never soft like Brandy, but at the same time, she is a little rougher than I would like...i think he CD did OK...but I don't think they show-cased her talent like they should have...
Brandy is totally been slept on...its promotion, i am telling you...Be and Rhiana have like the best promotion its crazy...Nelly had to come back and reinvent herself because her album before this one pretty much flooped...
its all about reinventing yourself, timing and promotion...there is enough room, just not all at the same time...you know...
i think both Monica and Brandy had life altering experiences that have changed them to this day (Monica) or have/has finished her career (Brandy). Monica's boyfriend shot himself in the head in front of her which is about the time she changed from a sweetheart to being rough around the edges....Brandy was in a car accident that killed some people (not sure on the amount of people) but she was heard at the scene of the accident sayin to herself, "I killed them". I believe Brandy is in a bad state of mind right now.
Afrodisiac is hot. Hands down.
I don't know what Monica and Brandy are going to do. I feel like their names are staples in the R&B name, so they might always be there. But they certainly need to step their games up to keep up with the Be's and Ciara's of today.
I like Mya. I feel like she can do whatever she wants and people will still like her.
I agree with the idea that Aaliyah would be a successful actress if she were still here. People respect Aaliyah so she would always cary that baby girl name and we would all love her no matter what.
Can you imagine Aaliyah and Be competing with each other in some category at the Grammys? Who would you hope would win?
